As most of my ideas for paintings do, the concept for this one just popped into my head a few weeks ago, while I was listening to Modest Mouse. I've always liked this song in particular-- certain memories I have, from when Laurie first introduced me to the CD, plus almost synesthetic images of frozen landscapes, melded together to create a very powerful vision. For me, painting is usually a very intuitive process; most of the time I know exactly what I'm doing before I pick up a brush, because I let the ideas come into being and ripen into something that I can almost see when I close my eyes, or when I look at a fresh canvas.

The song in question ("The Cold Part") gives me a very lonely, isolated feeling - the feeling of being separated from everybody else in the whole world, and being someplace dark and frigid. It almost sounds to me like depression feels. So the landscape reflects that. The terrain is jagged, unforgiving and stark. I've said before that I like working with white, blue, grey and black, and this gave me another perfect opportunity.

And yes, I know I sort of ripped off van Gogh in how I dealt with the moon and stars. Call it an influence.
