Mountain Totems (2012)
acrylic on canvas, 8" x 8"

This was actually the third piece I produced for the Anonymous Show-- but it was the second of two which I sold. It was pretty incredible, too, the way it happened.

The painting itself is a view of a group of wooden totem poles on top of Burnaby Mountain. They're not actually First Nations totems, though-- they were carved by a pair of Ainu artists from Japan, to commemorate the twinning of Burnaby with a town on the island of Hokkaido. Admittedly, when I was finished with this one, I wasn't as taken by it as I was with the other two I produced for the show. I thought my colour-shifting experiment had gone a bit too far, and the result wasn't quite what I had expected. Shows what I know.

By the end of the show, I was getting ready to fly back to Florida for Christmas with my family. I checked the gallery one last time on the last day, and the two paintings I hadn't sold on opening night were still hanging there on the walls. I was a bit disappointed, but then again, I'd already sold one, so I resigned myself to my small victory and packed my bags.

When I got back, I received my $50 paycheque for Belcarra View in the mail. It was pretty thrilling, I must say! The next day, after I had deposited it at the bank, I headed up to North Vancouver to pick up the two remaining paintings that hadn't sold. I walked into the gallery and told them who I was, and they said I actually only had one to pick up.

While I was in Florida, the gallery stayed open an extra week. The show was technically officially over, but they hadn't yet removed the paintings from the walls. That very last Friday, as the gallery was getting ready to shut down until after the New Year, someone came into the gallery looking for a painting as a Christmas present and apparently was drawn to this one. So... I sold two out of three! As I was standing there at their reception area, completely blindsided, they retrieved the single painting I had left in the show, and they wrote out a second $50 cheque.

Cool story. I like the painting. Only part that "bugs" me is the bottom left; the "foundation" that supports the big cedar log and the ground around it. Other than that, it looks swell. :)
